How we bring a green pool back

Every green pool is different, so we evaluate the actual condition before deciding how to treat it.

  1. 1

    Assess

We evaluate the water condition, debris load, pool size, circulation, pump, filter and visible equipment condition before deciding how to treat the pool.

  2. 2

    Quote the complete job

After the assessment, Turtle Pool Care provides a price for the complete Green-to-Clean job.

The quoted price is for the agreed Green-to-Clean result, not for a preset number of visits.

  3. 3

    Treat the actual condition

We apply the corrective chemistry appropriate for the pool's actual condition rather than using one universal treatment for every green pool.

  4. 4

    Brush, circulate and filter

We brush appropriate pool surfaces and use circulation and filtration to remove suspended material as the treatment progresses.

  5. 5

    Service the filtration as required

Heavily contaminated water can load a cartridge filter quickly, so filtration condition is monitored throughout the process.

  6. 6

    Return as needed

We continue testing, treating and cleaning the pool as needed rather than stopping after an arbitrary number of visits.

  7. 7

    Finish blue, clear and balanced

Once the Green-to-Clean job is accepted, Turtle Pool Care continues the treatment process until the pool is blue, clear and balanced.

Afterward, the pool can transition back to normal weekly maintenance if the customer chooses.

One quoted price for the Green-to-Clean job

Turtle Pool Care prices Green-to-Clean as a complete corrective job rather than charging for an arbitrary number of treatment visits.

After we assess the pool, we provide the price. Once you approve that price, we stick to it and continue the Green-to-Clean process until the pool is blue, clear and balanced.

The time and number of visits can vary from one pool to another, so we promise the agreed price and result rather than a fixed number of days.

Quoted by the job. We keep going until it's blue, clear and balanced.

What affects the price?

The amount of work required depends on the actual condition of the pool.

  • How green the pool is
  • How long the pool has been green
  • Pool size
  • Debris load
  • Water condition
  • Filter condition
  • Circulation quality
  • Pump and equipment condition
  • Whether metals or source-water problems are contributing to the appearance

Equipment repairs, replacement parts or other equipment defects discovered during the process are quoted separately before repair work is performed.

Why did the pool turn green?

A green pool usually points to sanitizer, circulation or maintenance issues. These are the most common contributors we see.

Low sanitizer

When chlorine falls too low for the pool conditions, algae can begin growing rapidly.

Strong sun and heat

Strong sun can increase chlorine demand, especially when stabilizer and sanitizer levels are not matched to the pool's needs.

Heavy rain

Summer rain can dilute pool chemistry and introduce additional debris.

Circulation or filtration problems

A failed pump, clogged cartridge filter, timer problem, poor circulation or other equipment issue can allow water quality to deteriorate.

Salt-system problems

On a saltwater pool, low chlorine production or a salt-cell problem can allow sanitizer levels to fall.

Missed maintenance or extended neglect

A pool that has been left without normal maintenance for an extended period can require substantially more corrective work.

Green water does not always mean algae

If a pool turns green, brown or tea-colored after chlorine is added, especially where well water or metals are involved, the problem may not be a normal algae bloom.

Metals such as iron can change appearance when oxidized, and organic source-water conditions such as tannins can also discolor water.

Treating every discolored pool as algae can waste chemicals and may contribute to staining, so we evaluate the condition before choosing the treatment.

That's why we test before we treat.

What if the pump or filter is part of the problem?

A green pool is sometimes the visible result of an equipment or circulation problem.

During the Green-to-Clean process, we look for visible issues involving the pump, cartridge filter, circulation and related equipment.

If repair work, replacement parts or equipment replacement is needed, that work is quoted separately and requires approval before proceeding.

When Green-to-Clean is commonly needed

  • Pool has been neglected or vacant
  • Chlorine or sanitizer was lost
  • Equipment failure allowed algae to take hold
  • Homeowner inherited a green pool after buying a property
  • Rental property needs the pool restored before normal use
  • Heavy algae growth has progressed beyond normal weekly maintenance

Green-to-Clean questions

Answers to common questions about this service.

Swim guidance during Green-to-Clean

Do not swim while the pool is undergoing Green-to-Clean treatment unless Turtle Pool Care has advised that the water conditions are appropriate for swimming.

Treatment and swim guidance depend on the chemicals used and current water conditions, so we let you know when it is safe to get back in the water.
