Pool Pump Repair & Replacement

Your pool pump keeps water circulating through the filter and treatment system. When it stops working, circulation and water quality can deteriorate quickly. Turtle Pool Care diagnoses pump problems, repairs what makes sense to repair, and provides straightforward replacement recommendations when the equipment is no longer worth repairing.

Serving Wellington, Westlake, Loxahatchee & The Acreage, Royal Palm Beach, Greenacres, Avenir, The Club at Ibis.

Common Pool Pump Problems We Diagnose

Pool pump symptoms can have more than one cause. These are some of the problems we diagnose; the correct fix depends on what is actually happening with your equipment.

Humming but not starting

Possible causes may include:

  • Failed capacitor
  • Worn motor bearings
  • Seized motor
  • Debris in the impeller
  • Timer or automation setting
  • Electrical or control issue

Loud screeching or grinding

Possible causes may include:

  • Worn motor bearings
  • Debris in the impeller
  • Mechanical wear
  • Other pump or motor issues

Won't turn on

Possible causes may include:

  • Breaker tripped or off
  • Timer or automation schedule
  • Electrical or control problem
  • Motor failure

Breaker trips

Possible causes may include:

  • Motor fault
  • Moisture or water near an electrical connection
  • Wiring issue
  • Overloaded circuit

Losing prime / air in the pump basket

Possible causes may include:

  • Low pool water level
  • Worn lid O-ring
  • Suction-side air leak
  • Loose fittings before the pump
  • Clogged impeller

Leaking at the pump

Possible causes may include:

  • Worn shaft seal
  • Loose fittings
  • Worn pump-lid O-ring
  • Cracked housing

Weak return flow

Possible causes may include:

  • Clogged impeller
  • Dirty filter
  • Suction restriction
  • Pump or impeller issue
  • Valve-position problem

Runs and then shuts off

Possible causes may include:

  • Overheating
  • Timer or automation setting
  • Motor fault
  • Voltage issue

Variable-speed pump error codes

An error code is useful diagnostic information and should be interpreted for the specific make and model rather than guessed from symptoms alone.

Quick Checks Before You Call

A few homeowner-safe checks can sometimes explain a pump that isn't running as expected, and they help us diagnose faster when you do call.

  • Confirm the breaker for the pool equipment is on
  • Check the timer or automation schedule
  • Check the pool water level
  • Clear the skimmer basket
  • Clear the pump basket
  • Compare the filter pressure with the pool's normal clean pressure

If there is buzzing, a burning smell, water near electrical connections, or repeated breaker tripping, turn off power at the breaker and arrange service. Do not open the motor, access electrical wiring, or attempt unsafe electrical troubleshooting yourself.

Repair or Replace?

Not every pump failure means the pump needs to be replaced. Some problems can be practical repairs, while others point toward replacement.

We look at what actually failed, the condition of the equipment, the repair cost compared with replacement, parts availability, and whether the pump is obsolete or repeatedly failing before recommending a path forward.

Failures that may be practical repairs

  • Capacitor
  • Shaft seal
  • O-ring
  • Clearing an impeller obstruction

When replacement may make more sense

  • Age and condition of the equipment
  • Repair cost vs replacement cost
  • Parts availability
  • Efficiency
  • Whether the existing pump is obsolete or repeatedly failing

Variable-speed pump replacement

Current federal efficiency standards affect many new residential pool pumps and replacement pool-pump motors, and variable-speed equipment is now common for residential replacements. Exact requirements depend on the equipment being replaced.

Compared with an older single-speed pump, a correctly sized and programmed variable-speed pump can run at lower speeds for normal circulation, which can mean quieter operation at lower speeds, programmable schedules, and improved efficiency compared with older single-speed equipment.

Correct sizing and programming matter — a variable-speed pump only performs as intended when it is matched to the pool and set up properly.

Pump brands we install and service

Turtle Pool Care installs and services pool pumps from major pool-equipment manufacturers including Pentair, Hayward and Jandy.

How weekly service helps catch pump problems early

Many pump problems develop gradually. During normal weekly service we observe the visible pool equipment, check the pump basket, note unusual noise or changes in circulation, and record the filter pressure.

Noticing a change in filter pressure or pump behavior early can help address a developing circulation or pump issue before it becomes a larger problem. When we see something that needs attention, we report the equipment concern to you.

What our customers say

Pool pump not working like it should?

Tell us what the pump is doing — humming, leaking, losing prime, tripping the breaker, or not running at all. Turtle Pool Care can diagnose the problem and explain whether repair or replacement makes sense.
